Creative Block
how I managed to free myself
Well, I am very pleased to say that I seem to have turned a corner and have left the creative blockage behind. It took a while…but I am back and good to go, here is what I did:
I came to the conclusion that if I just relaxed and let it happen, with a few small steps I could overcome the feeling of complete failure and turn it into a learning opportunity.
For the first few days I just kept going for walks, really looking around me and taking nature in. I spent quite some time looking at some of my inspirational collection of books, ranging from travel journals to colour theory. Quite a bit of time was also spent trawling Pinterest and Instagram and then I had a long mooch through all my stash and gave my studio a really good tidy and clean out. I had another sale of yarns which I knew I would never use, discovered a couple of new hand-dyers who’s yarn I really want to try and after some self awareness and mindfulness exercises I was ready to play.
I think one of the things we as designers can fall short of is just playing with ideas, yarns and techniques, so I had a seriously good play.
Hooray hooray…the big vacuum was gone and the mojo was back and as I had just received some lovely yarn from Amy at Mamie and Florrie, I set forth and started a new shawl design.
Embracing bold colour and slubby yarn, I loved knitting every stitch and Tutti Frutti will be released sometime next week.
Have a great weekend, embracing whatever you are doing.
Until soon,
Heike xo

That's so good you've turned the corner and enjoyed all you've been doing, plus you've got a new design as well! How wonderful! Tutti Fruitti looks joyful :)
You had me at the long walk, then the inspirational books and then quite literally I was with you for the studio sorting out. 😄 All these things have helped me get out of slumps too. But it was great to read it in your words. The shawl looks lovely and I am guessing it might be suitable for mixing some handspun and commercial yarn in a project! 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽
